The small town of Gander, with a population of only 9, 000, provided shelter for 38 aircrafts, containing 6, 500 passengers. Beverley Bass, the first female captain for American Airlines, was in route from the Charles de Gaulle airport to the Dallas/FW airport on 9/11. Due to the closure of American airspace, her flight was ordered to land at Gander Int’l airport. Her plane was the 36th of the 38 that landed in Gander that day. Diane and Nick were passengers in route to America on 9/11 when their plane was diverted to Gander. They met in a shelter in Gander and a love story for the ages bloomed over those days. Nick proposed to Diane in November of 2001 and they have been married ever since. Claude Elliott served as the mayor of Gander for 21 years, from 1996 – 2017. As the town’s leader in 2001, he was responsible for facilitating all the necessary provisions for the 6, 500 passengers sheltered in Gander for the 5 days following 9/11. Diane Davis, a longtime resident of Gander, was a teacher at Gander Academy when 6, 500 passengers landed at Gander Int’l airport. Diane oversaw transitioning Gander Academy from a school to a place of lodging for the passengers, including food, clothing, and other provisions. Brian Mosher & Janice Goudie Brian Mosher, a television reporter, and Janice Goudie, a newbie newspaper reporter were the only local media in Gander during the 5 days following 9/11. If you need your spirits lifted and/or you have lost your way then you absolutely need to watch this 84 minute documentary that provides the story of a real life tragedy when Operation Yellow Ribbon went into effect and the people from the tiny town (10,000 people) of Gander Newfoundland,Canada, showed what unselfish hospitality was truly like when terroists struck the twin towers of New York City and the USA closed all of their airports.
The 10,000 people who reside in Gander welcomed with open arms and their purest love for the approximate 6,700 multi cultural passengers and flight crew(s) that literally fell out of the sky looking for a safe place to land, sleep and eat for the next few days while the tragedy of 9:11 in New York city was unfolding. You will hear the actual stories from both the survivors from all over the world whose planes landed in a place/country they had never heard or ever been in before called Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, as well as from many of the towns people of Gander Newfoundland, Canada.
This is an inspiring story that should be shown in all schools and church services as it truly shows the outpouring of kindness and care for our fellow mankind. A successful musical titled Come From Away made it to Broadway in 2017 and is still being shown today. It is an inspiring story filled with love and kindness out of the tragedy of 9:11 and so many lives that were tragically lost.
See it and you will also be touched and hopefully the world becomes a better place to live as a result in some small way due to the kindness of the people from Gander, Newfoundland, Canada.
